Big Earthquake in Japan

has me worried about tsunami.  I am up in the mountains, so not worried about me, but called my parents on Oahu.  Mom lives in a low lying area, fortunately on the other side of the island from Japan.

Of course, I am scheduled for an early morning meeting in a building right in the very heart of tsunami zone.  In 1946, this building had fish in it in the aftermath of a large tsunami.  I am sure they will cancel if there has been a tsunami - even if we, too, are on the side of this island facing away from Japan.

Feeling anxious as we wait to hear.

Okay, now we've had an earthquake and the coastal areas are evacuating...not me, guys. I live up mauka, but still.

Now waiting for the phone tree call to cancel school tomorrow - kind of wondering what they are waiting on here. My kids' school cancelled and it's miles from the coast...because they obviously know that the roads and stuff will be a mess. Our school is right in the heart of the tsunami zone...

It was horrible in Japan. When they said Hawaii was under high alert a few hours ago I immediately thought about you. Am so glad to hear you are up in the mountains. Hope the rest of you family will take the necessary precautions.

Stay safe and take care.

wow! just popped in to check on you. looks like hawaii is in the clear for flooding? i have a friend heading to oahu today - is there any word on the airport? hopefully this will all be over soon. be safe!

OFG, looks like the airport is open, but some jets have turned around. Hope your friend isn't too inconvenienced.

I have friends in Japan, Grandpa. They all seem to be safe, but it's awful.

I am sure my family is safe - none of us live in a tsunami evacuation zone, and so far the waves have been not so bad. We're expecting more, and the first wave is not always the biggest, so keep us in the prayers.

FBMKW, I am still not sure if work was cancelled - but I am sure that the whole area is still closed, so I guess I can take that as a clue.

I hear that the tsunami was 7 feet high in Hilo. It's still dark here.

We have been watching all of the news reports all morning but the info coming from Hawaii is so slow/vague - surprising given the technology age we are in. Guess you still have a few hours before the islands are still out of danger. Remembering the Tsunami warning sirens from our youth but the testing and any live warnings were always sounded in the daylight. Must have been scary to hear them at night.

Daph, looks like Kahului and Kona have had damaging waves. Hilo had a 1 meter surge, but haven't had any reports. Apparently, my work is still open.... but how anyone is supposed to get there with the whole area blocked off is beyond me.

Work was cancelled about 2 minutes after I was supposed to be there....lovely response time, heh?

I cancelled my student group last night.

OFG, apparently, Maui was hit fairly hard with water heading in about 1/3 of a mile from coastlines. I still haven't seen any footage, and I don't know what went on in Hilo.

Work was cancelled, but I had already called in absent :).

Thanks, Chai Chai and Deb. We've been very lucky here. I am devastated by the destruction in Japan. All the people I know in Japan are fine, although even in Tokyo it's a struggle right now, but the images are staggering.
