Wow!

Came home and my kids had cleaned up the basement tv area, the eleven year old had made the pizza dough and she sewed a little pouch with a button for me.  I am pretty amazed and pleased.

Once again, I have to say, "Yay for kids!"  (and yay for husbands who get after them to do something other than sit in front of electronic devices all day).

Drove through a pounding rain downpour - knew I had to beat it up the mountain, so I could stay semi-dry while opening the gate.  I won the race with the rain, thankfully, but I hear it coming now.  I noticed the blackberry bushes on the fence near the driveway are loaded with blossoms.  In 15 years, we've only had one year of enough berries for pie - I hope this will be another one of those years!

Are your blackberries the little wild ones or the big ones we have growing all over here? The big ones make great jelly, but the seeds are huge. What great kids... Since I'm down to my last teenaged girl I always get nervous when she does stuff like that.

Probably closer to your little wild ones. I made a pie once.... I wonder what combination of rain and sun made 1997 the year for blackberries - and no other year so far?

Up in the Volcano they have ohelo berries, which are wonderful, but you need to leave them for the nene geese. I was wondering if I could grow them, though.

Good on your kids! I know you must be proud.

Blackberries make the best pie and jam. Actually any berry will do. Is it weather that is a problem for your blackberries? Or birds, like my blueberries? It might be worth a try to grow those ohelo berries. Who knows, they may grow well for you!

Leigh, I really think it is the weather - they will make one little bubble of a berry and not fill out the rest. The grass is long enough that it probably deters the birds. I wouldn't mind trying ohelo - or maybe low chill blueberries, which I hear do well up here. Some kind of fruit in addition to infrequent (but tons when we get them) bananas and lemons would be appreciated.
